How to Choose a Loose Emerald

Start with the stone’s appearance and proportions, not carat weight alone. Colour is judged by hue, tone and saturation; clarity is considered differently from diamond because natural inclusions are common within emeralds. Check the face-up dimensions, cut symmetry and any visible windowing. Then review origin and treatment information, plus the scope of any laboratory report. Contact us if you need further information on the emeralds.

Origin, Treatment and Reports

Colombian, Brazilian and Zambian emeralds can each show a wide range of colours and clarity characteristics, so origin alone does not determine quality. Many natural emeralds receive clarity enhancement with oil or resin, with no oil or insignificant oil being the rarest of emeralds. We report information where available and recommend reading the treatment guide before comparing a no-oil stone with an enhanced stone.

Buying a Stone for Jewellery

If the emerald will be set into a ring or another piece, share the intended design before committing. Shape, depth, corner protection and setting style all affect the finished result. You can buy the stone loose, ask us to work with your jeweller, or commission a custom piece around it.

Are your loose emeralds natural?

The collection is intended for natural emeralds only. Each product description should identify the known origin, treatment and report details. Where a point is not independently verified, it should be described as supplier-stated rather than certified.

Do all emeralds have laboratory reports?

No. A report is included only when it is shown or stated on the product page. Ask before purchase if independent origin or treatment reporting is important to you.

Can you source a different size or shape?

Yes, subject to availability. Send the shape, dimensions or carat range, preferred colour, origin, treatment tolerance and budget through our contact page. We can have a custom emerald order sent to us in around 3 days from Colombia.

Can a loose emerald be made into a ring?

Yes. A setting can be designed around the selected stone, with particular attention to its corners, depth and natural inclusions.
